What Is PLA in 3D Printing? PLA vs PLA+

Buy anything 3D printed and one word usually appears on the label: PLA. That word decides how the part behaves in the heat, how it survives a drop and how it will look in three years. Here is what it means in practice — no chemistry lecture, just the behaviour of the object in your hand.

What PLA actually is

PLA — polylactic acid — is a thermoplastic made from plant sources such as corn starch and sugarcane. It became the default filament in 3D printing for practical reasons: it melts at a low temperature, barely warps while printing, holds sharp corners and fine detail faithfully, and gives off almost no smell. Compared with petroleum-based materials like ABS it releases far fewer harmful fumes during printing. The trade-off is character: PLA is rigid rather than springy, and past a certain load it prefers to crack rather than flex.

How PLA+ differs

PLA+ is not a separate chemical family — it is PLA reinforced with toughening additives. It prints at the same temperatures but takes impact and bending far better. You notice it the moment something falls off a table: plain PLA can crack at a corner, while PLA+ usually shrugs off the same drop without a mark. Layer adhesion improves too, so the part resists splitting along the print lines. The surface reads matte and solid rather than glossy and cheap. The heat ceiling: where not to leave it

Heat is PLA's well-known weakness. The material starts to soften somewhere around 55–60°C, comfortably above any indoor temperature — but a dashboard in summer sun passes 70°C without effort. A case forgotten on the dash of a closed car can deform within hours. The same goes for radiators, fireplace mantels and sunlit windowsills. Pockets, bags and shelves are entirely safe; you just need to know where the line is. Worth noting: this has nothing to do with the flame, since the shell is designed so that the nozzle never touches it.

Wear, scratches and how it ages

In everyday pocket carry a PLA+ case will give you years of trouble-free use. Wear shows first at the mouth of the shell, where the lighter is pulled in and out constantly, and that area gradually takes on a slight sheen. Scratch resistance is moderate: share a pocket with a set of keys and you will collect fine surface marks. Long UV exposure yellows light-coloured filaments slightly, which is why a display cabinet is better off away from the window. Actual breakage, in practice, only becomes a real risk with a hard drop onto stone or tile.

Keeping it clean

PLA+ asks for almost nothing. A damp cloth, with a drop of mild soap when it needs it, covers everything. Acetone, thinners, alcohol-based cleaners and dishwashers are all off the table — they dull the matte finish and stain the surface. And never put the lighter back in before the shell has dried completely. That is the whole maintenance routine.

Why we print in PLA+

A lighter case comes out of a pocket several times a day and gets dropped on desks; it needs fine detail and toughness at once. PLA+ is one of the few materials that gives both. Resin captures sharper detail but is brittle and shifts colour in sunlight. ABS handles heat better but warps as it prints, loses fine features and needs proper ventilation. PETG flexes nicely, yet its glossy surface swallows the detail on character sculpts. For a catalogue built on carved faces and raised texture, PLA+ is the most balanced answer on both the production and the ownership side. Is PLA+ genuinely stronger than PLA?

Yes. PLA+ is the same base polymer with toughening additives, giving noticeably better impact and bending resistance along with stronger layer adhesion.

Can a PLA print be left in a car or in direct sun?

No. PLA starts softening around 55–60°C, and a closed car in summer easily exceeds that, which can permanently deform the part.

Is PLA environmentally friendly?

It is plant-derived and lower-emission to produce than petroleum plastics. It is compostable under industrial conditions, but it will not break down on its own in a home bin.

Are visible layer lines a defect?

No — layer lines are the natural texture of 3D printing. Genuine defects are broken layers, gaps or leftover support marks, and those are dealt with before packing.
